An
enormous marble quarry in the open air.
This is how the Necropolis Cristobal Colon
in Havana, appears to us, so great is the
amount of marble here. Mainly from Carrara,
it is highlighted by the contrast of the
blue sky and the tropical vegetation of
perpetual green. Such a profusion in these
latitudes is surprising. In Colon many artists
found a place to express their talents,
among them many top-ranking foreign creators
as the Spaniards Benlliure and Querol.
The architectural abundance (there are more
than 50000 mausoleums, chapels, family vaults,
galleries and ossuaries) the profusion of
funeral statues, the richness and quality
of their execution, and the diversity of
styles are reasons enough to impress any
visitors.
